Frequently asked questions

MiVU.NZ is dedicated to providing an efficient, reliable, and high-quality mobile ultrasound service directly to your veterinary clinic. We believe in transparency and ensuring you have all the information you need. Here are answers to questions often asked. If you have other questions, please contact your veterinarian.

What do I need to know about arranging an ultrasound and preparing my pet for an ultrasound?

To ensure the best results, please note the following patient preparation guidelines:

Patients should be fasted for at least 8-12 hours prior to the scan (unless contraindicated by your vet). Please try not to toilet your pet before an ultrasound.

Most patients will be sedated for their comfort and ease of examination, which allows for a more thorough scan.

The area to be scanned will also need to be clipped.

We kindly ask that you allow at least 1 hour prior to the scheduled appointment for patient drop-off at your clinic. This buffer accommodates traffic variability and emergency adjustments.

What happens during the examination, and how do I receive the results?

Light sedation is given to facilitate rest and reduce movement. Your usual clinic nurses will be there to provide monitoring during the procedure.

Your pet will be shaved to allow the ultrasound waves to penetrate through the air trapped in the fur/hair.

The ultrasound probe uses high frequency sound waves to assess body parts. Different shades of grey give us more information. No radioactivity is involved.

Once the ultrasound is performed, a verbal report will be provided to your vet at the time of the examination, allowing for immediate discussion and preliminary findings. A comprehensive written report will follow within 24 hours, often much sooner, detailing all findings and recommendations.

Can I be there for the ultrasound?

To maintain a calm and focused environment essential for a thorough scan, owners are not present during the examination. We work directly with your veterinary team.

While we strive for punctuality, occasional delays or early arrivals due to traffic or emergency adjustments can occur. We'll always try to keep your team informed of any timing changes. Please have your pet arrive at least 1 hour prior to the appointment.

How long does an ultrasound procedure typically take?

Ultrasound procedures usually take about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the complexity of the case and patient cooperation. You should allow at least 4 hours for your animals scan, this will allow for timing adjustments, and sedation recovery.
